a friend and pianist from Seattle who had recently moved to Berlin, was for a while living in a store-front of an old Modellbahn shop (train-models). It was a piano in there, so he started setting up small intimate piano related concert evenings.
Even though I’m in no sense known or related as a pianist, Kelly invited me to perform. I accepted, as i love improvising on the piano and never really did it in front of an audience. I saw it as an intriguing challenge. Improvising on the piano is something i do almost every night at home with my own piano before i go to sleep as a way of clearing my mind. Its a cleansing routine.
For this specific recording at the Modellbahn in Friedrichshain, May 18th 2017 i decided to leave the door open as i performed, as it was located directly next to the piano and it was a warm day. The ambient sounds outside blended itself nicely with the repetitive piano themes. Cars, wind, dogs, Some people even stopped to look inside.
Big thanks to Kelly Wyse for inviting, organising, recording and taking the photo. Live Improvisation from the Modellbahn house concert - May 18th, 2017 - Berlin.
The Modellbahn series still goes on, though at various locations. See more info here :
